Katharine Hepburn Brownies c2014 TRC 1.jpg

The other night Brian had dinner with a friend at Bartlett's (formerly Houston's Restaurant only in Austin). He jokingly asked if I wanted him to bring home their five-nut brownie. Of course, I said no.

That night I couldn't stop thinking about brownies, I don't remember exactly what I googled, but I came across Katharine Hepburn's Brownie Recipe.

OMG, this former leading lady of Hollywood and her brownies, are the real deal. I give these 5 stars, a 10, a gold medal, an A+! Gooey in the inside with a nice crust on top. Not too sweet, with just the right amount of nuts. Hope the neighbors like them! Cause the rest has got to go...and not on my hips!

Serves 4

  • 2 squares (2 ounces) Baker's unsweetened chocolate or 1/2 cup cocoa (I used the squares)

  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter

  • 1/4 cup flour

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1 cup walnuts or pecans, roughly chopped (I used walnuts)

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 eggs

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and butter an 8x8 baking pan.

<making the brownies>

  • Melt chocolate squares and butter in a heavy sauce pan over medium-low heat. Stir constantly until smooth.

  • Remove from heat and set aside.

  • Combine flour, salt and nuts in small bowl; set aside.

  • Add sugar to the pan with the chocolate mixture, and whisk until blended.

  • Whisk in vanilla and eggs to the mixture.

  • Stir in the remaining ingredients: flour, salt and nuts.

  • Pour batter in the pan and bake about 40 minutes.

  • Cool completely, before cutting it into squares.

  • Do not let the chocolate and butter mixture burn to the pan, I almost did.

  • To save time, I used the precut 'chopped walnuts.'
